The
month was April, 2nd day in 1992 as Hank, Billy and I went downtown
to the Florida Theater, Jacksonville to see Hank's dear friend,
George Benson.
Hank
was quite moved just to be going to see George and the band.
We were seated in the finest seats in the house as we waited
to see George come on stage. The house was packed out with hundreds
anticipating the start of this great show when George Benson
and the band appeared.
Hank's
eyes were gleaming like stars when, to his surprise, George opened
his show with the words: "I would like to dedicate this
show to the man who is responsible for me being here today, my
friend, my mentor, Hank Garland!"
He
held out his hand as the spotlight was directed to Hank. George
asked him to stand. Everyone in the theater stood up in a standing
ovation to honor Hank and George. This union and bond was felt
by everyone there. Hank's eyes were full of tears as he stood,
yet Hank had so much admiration for George and was proud to see
George taking the stage that Hank loved so much for many years
in his youth.
